Model Based Definition (MBD) at Scania
Scania is one of the global leaders in the industry of trucks, buses and engines as well as providing services in sustainable transportation. The largest markets are Europe and Latin America but also expanding fast in Asia. A lot of R&D and corporate headquarters are consolidated to the site in Södertälje Sweden.

Challenge
Updating to 3DExperience
Scania is in the process of upgrading their CAD/PLM system from Catia V5/Enovia to 3DExperience. In that context, Scania is reviewing their way of working and how to better accommodate the users’ needs in these systems. One area of improvement is to move away from 2D drawings as the main carrier of product information and instead define everything in the 3D model. This brings many potential benefits but also challenges since it’s a new way of working that affects many different stakeholders and it needs processes and tools to support it.

Solution
Concept Development
As the Business analyst and Scrum Master in a dedicated team of 5 people, we worked closely with stakeholders in production purchasing and R&D, to gather and analyze key requirements. Our structured approach included:
Concepts developed: Model-Based PMI, Product definition data container, Optional design in 3D, Identification of requirements.
Technologies/Tools Used: Catia V5/Enovia/OAS (AS-IS analysis), 3D Experience (concept work).
Key Collaborations: Worked close to other teams on 3D Experience implementation, for example: Mechanical Design, PDM-Integration, Engineering Change Management and Manufacturing.

Implementation & Execution
Concepts developed: Model-Based PMI, Product definition data container, Optional design in 3D, Identification of requirements.
Technologies/Tools Used: Catia V5/Enovia/OAS (AS-IS analysis), 3D Experience (concept work).
Key Collaborations: Worked close to other teams on 3D Experience implementation, for example: Mechanical Design, PDM-Integration, Engineering Change Management and Manufacturing.
Result
Model-based PMI
Key Outcome: Concept work completed for use case: “model-based PMI” And foundation laid for other use cases: “Product definition data container”, “Optional design in 3D”, “Identification of requirements".
Impact: Once implemented, the MBD concepts will improve the way technical requirements are defined and presented in 3D, which will:
Reduced risks of mistakes and less manual work needed.
Improve access to product information for collaboration between different departments in product development.

Enable machine-readability of tolerances etc. To be re-used for measurements, work instructions, CNC programs and other downstreams activities.
Will improve product data quality and maintain digital thread in all IT systems.
"It was a pleasure to work with the team at Scania."

Future Outlook
New Data Definitions
Once implemented, MBD will fundamentally change how technical data is defined at Scania. 3DExperience is in the early phases of implementation with different waves of new functionality to be implemented over several years’ time.
